Florida girl, 13, made plea before being shot in face by stepdad after Christmas argument

A 13-year-old Florida girl is fighting for her life after a tragic family incident just days before Christmas. On December 22, Jason Kenney, 47, allegedly shot his wife, Crystal Kenney, before targeting his stepdaughter and later dying by suicide. The teen, whose identity has not been released, is in critical but stable condition and has been able to communicate with investigators despite her serious injuries.

The events reportedly began with an argument over Monday Night Football. Jason Kenney had been watching the San Francisco 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts in a shed behind the house and later came inside to watch the final minutes on the main television. Crystal allegedly told him he could not take over, which sparked a heated dispute that quickly escalated into violence.

During the confrontation, Crystal instructed her 12-year-old son to run to a neighbor’s house to call 911. Sheriff Grady Judd explained that as the boy left, he heard a gunshot. When deputies arrived, they found Crystal dead from a gunshot wound to the head and the 13-year-old with injuries to her shoulder and face. Remarkably, one bullet entered the bridge of the teen’s nose and exited the top of her head without being fatal.

The family’s one-year-old daughter was found unharmed, sleeping safely in her crib. Jason Kenney fled the home after the shootings, calling his sister in New York to admit, “I’ve done something very, very bad. The next time you see me will be on the news.” Authorities later tracked him to his father’s house, where he had barricaded himself and died by suicide.

Investigators found a handwritten note from Crystal urging Jason to seek help for substance abuse, mentioning drinking and cocaine use. The note highlights ongoing struggles within the family and an attempt to prevent further harm before the tragedy occurred.
