Two Best Friends, Both 14, Die After Spending Time at a Citrus County Park

Two Florida families are mourning after best friends George Watts and Derrick “DJ” Hubbard, both 14, died in a tragic accident at a sand pit in Citrus County. What began as a normal afternoon of outdoor play ended in devastating loss.

The boys went out on January 11, 2026, to dig and explore, an activity familiar to many children in the area. When they failed to return home, concern quickly turned to panic.

Derrick’s mother rushed to the park and found only their bikes and shoes. Realizing something was terribly wrong, she began digging in the sand as first responders arrived at the scene.

Investigators later determined the boys had unknowingly dug a deep hole in unstable sugar sand. The ground collapsed, trapping them beneath the surface before they could escape.

George was pulled from the sand first and briefly showed signs of life. Derrick was found moments later without signs of responsiveness. Emergency crews rushed both boys for medical care.

Despite doctors’ efforts, Derrick died that same day. George remained hospitalized but passed away two days later, leaving their families, school, and neighborhood in profound shock.

In the midst of grief, George’s family made a powerful decision. His mother, Jasmine Watts, chose to donate his organs, allowing her son to save other lives even in death.

The community has responded with vigils, honor walks, fundraisers, and memorials celebrating the boys’ friendship and spirit. Their story now stands as a heartbreaking reminder of hidden dangers in everyday play and the importance of awareness to prevent future tragedies.
