People shocked to learn how young Keira Knightley was in Pirates of the Caribbean

Keira Knightley, now 40, rose to global fame as Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. She landed the role as a teenager, stepping into a part that would define the early years of her career.

Born in England, Knightley began acting at just six years old, taking small television and film roles. Early appearances included Sabé in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Jules in Bend It Like Beckham.

It was Elizabeth Swann, however, who truly launched her into Hollywood stardom. Producers praised her classic screen presence, comparing her to stars from Hollywood’s golden era.

Knightley embraced the role’s physical demands, performing challenging scenes and enduring long shoots. The franchise became a global phenomenon, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest becoming one of the fastest films to surpass $1 billion worldwide.

Yet success brought intense scrutiny. Tabloids frequently targeted Knightley, speculating about her health and personal life during her late teens and early twenties.

She later revealed that the pressure contributed to a mental breakdown several years after filming. Diagnosed with dyslexia at age six, Knightley has spoken about how public criticism deeply affected her confidence and well-being.

Many fans were surprised to learn she was only 17 going on 18 when filming began. Online discussions often reflect disbelief at how young she was while carrying such a major production.

Despite early challenges, Knightley’s performances remain widely respected. She is remembered not only for iconic roles but also for her resilience in navigating fame and media pressure at a remarkably young age.
