Within hours she was in septic shock. Doctors discovered the cause wasn’t influenza at all, but menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS), a rare, fast-moving infection triggered by bacterial toxins. The likely culprit: a tampon she’d been using exactly as instructed.
