‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star James Van Der Beek Dead at 48 After Public Cancer Battle

James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48 following a public battle with colorectal cancer. His family confirmed that he passed peacefully, surrounded by love.

They shared that he faced his final days with courage, faith, and grace. In late 2024, he revealed he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, though symptoms had appeared the year before. The illness was discovered during a colonoscopy.

Despite the diagnosis, he remained hopeful and continued working when possible. He often spoke about how his health journey deepened his gratitude and sense of purpose. Support from family, friends, and fans gave him strength throughout treatment.

Born in Connecticut, he discovered his passion for acting at a young age. His breakout role on Dawson’s Creek made him one of the most recognizable young television stars of the late 1990s.

He later built a diverse career, appearing in films such as Varsity Blues and television projects including Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and CSI: Cyber.

He also connected with new audiences while competing on Dancing With the Stars, showing humor and humility beyond his dramatic roles.

Beyond his career, he was known as a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children, who remained the center of his life.

Remembered for his honesty and resilience, he leaves behind a legacy defined not only by fame but by gratitude, perseverance, and love for his family.
